Cracks are the language stucco uses. Fine hairline crazing spread evenly across a wall is normal, the material shrinking and weathering the way cement products do, and filling it usually creates a more visible problem than the crazing itself. What matters is when cracking stops being random and starts being organized. A crack with a direction, a repeating angle, or a consistent location relative to the framing is not the surface complaining. It is the building moving, and the stucco is simply the part of the wall you can see it in.
So the first job is reading, not filling. A contractor who quotes crack repair by the linear foot before looking at where the cracks sit is selling you caulk. Stair-step patterns at corners, diagonals leaving the corners of window and door openings, and horizontal lines at floor level each point at a different mechanism, and each has a different correct response. Some need nothing. Some need the crack routed, reinforced, and rebuilt. Some are telling you water has already been getting in behind the wall for a while.
Every crack gets located relative to openings, corners, floor lines, and joints. The map is what turns a scatter of individual cracks into a mechanism you can name and address.
Shrinkage cracking is fine, shallow, and stable. Movement cracking is wider at one end, may show offset between the two faces, and tends to reopen after filling, which changes the repair entirely.
Moisture readings around and below suspect cracks, plus a look at the interior side, tell you whether you have a cosmetic issue or an entry point that has been feeding the wall cavity.
Stable cracks get routed, reinforced, and rebuilt in kind. Moving cracks need the movement addressed first, and a joint may be the right answer instead of a rigid patch that will crack again.
Crack work prices out along a few lines. The extent of the cracking comes first, since isolated cracks and a wall covered in organized cracking are different projects. Then depth: a crack that only needs routing and rebuilding in the finish is straightforward, while a crack that has been letting water in and requires opening the wall to correct the barrier behind it is a much larger scope. Access and height add staging. Finally there is appearance. Filled cracks are visible, so the choice between accepting that, fog coating the elevation to pull color together, or recoating the wall is often the biggest factor in the number.
Generally no. Sealant in a field crack is highly visible, traps water rather than shedding it, and makes a proper repair harder later because the material has to be dug back out. Sealant belongs at joints and terminations that are designed to move, not across the face of the wall. If a crack is passing water, the fix is opening and correcting it, not smearing over it.
Width alone is a weak signal. A hairline crack that is wet and staining the wall below matters more than a wider crack in a dry, stable area. Pattern matters more than measurement: organized cracking with direction, cracking that reopens after repair, and cracking with offset between the two sides all point at movement, and movement needs the cause found before the crack is filled.
Because the crack is a symptom of movement that has not stopped. Framing shrinkage, settlement, deflection at a floor line, or thermal expansion on a long unbroken wall will all reopen a rigid patch, usually within a season or two. The answer is either addressing the movement or giving the wall somewhere to move on purpose, which may mean a joint where none exists.
Sometimes, but not usually. Openings concentrate stress, and cracks at their corners are common where reinforcement in the lath was thin. What separates routine from serious is whether the crack is growing, whether it shows offset, whether it lines up with other cracking on the same elevation, and whether it is wet. Those four questions decide how deep the investigation should go.
Damaged stucco rarely starts at the surface. A repair contractor opens the failed area, finds what wet it, corrects the barrier and flashing behind it, then rebuilds the coats and works out how the new finish will meet the old.
