Almost every stucco crack falls into one of two families. Shrinkage cracking happens as cement products cure and lose moisture, and it produces fine, shallow, wandering lines with no particular direction. Movement cracking happens when something behind the stucco changes shape, and it produces cracks with direction, consistent location, and often a difference in width from one end to the other. Telling those two apart is the whole exercise, because one of them is cosmetic and the other is a message about the building.

You can do a rough version of this yourself before anyone comes out. Look at a crack in raking light, early morning or late afternoon, when the shadow makes the surface readable. Ask whether the cracks repeat in a pattern across the elevation or scatter randomly. Ask whether they start and stop at particular features, like the corner of an opening or a floor line. Random and fine points toward shrinkage. Organized and located points toward movement, and movement is the one worth a professional look.

Hairline crazing is the wall curing, not the wall failing

Fine map-like crazing across the field of a wall is the most common thing homeowners call about and the least likely to mean trouble. It is what cement does as it cures and then weathers under sun and temperature swings. In Utah, where a wall can swing dozens of degrees between afternoon and midnight and take intense UV all summer, that surface cracking develops on essentially every stucco wall given enough seasons. It is not a defect and it is not an entry point in any meaningful sense.

The mistake is treating it aggressively. Filling hairline crazing with sealant or a heavy patching compound creates a visible network of lines that reads far worse than the crazing did, and it does nothing for water because there was no meaningful water path to begin with. If crazing bothers you visually, the honest options are a fog coat or a recoat, which are finish operations on the whole surface rather than repairs to individual cracks. That distinction saves a lot of money and regret.

Stair-step cracking at corners follows what is behind the wall

When a crack climbs a wall in a staircase pattern, it is usually tracing something in the substrate. On masonry construction it follows the mortar joints, stepping up along the path of least resistance. The stucco is just the visible surface of a movement that is happening in the material behind it, which is why filling it accomplishes so little on its own. The pattern tends to concentrate at corners and near the base of walls, where loads and restraint are greatest.

Stair-step patterns earn a closer look than any other cosmetic crack because their causes range from harmless to significant. Minor settlement that finished happening years ago leaves a stable crack that can be repaired and forgotten. Ongoing movement, whether from foundation settlement, expansive soil, or drainage that keeps saturating the ground on one side of the house, will reopen anything you put in it. The useful test is time: whether the crack is growing, and whether it shows offset between the two faces.

Diagonals off window and door corners are stress leaving the opening

Openings interrupt the wall, and stress concentrates at their corners. That is why diagonal cracks running out at roughly forty-five degrees from the corners of window and door openings are one of the most recognizable patterns in stucco. In many cases they reflect an installation detail: reinforcement in the lath at the corners of openings is what is supposed to distribute that stress, and where it was thin or missing, the wall cracks where the stress went instead.

Whether these matter depends on what they do next. A short diagonal that has been stable for years, is not wet, and does not repeat at every opening on the house is usually a finish repair. Diagonals that appear at multiple openings on the same elevation, that grow, or that show a step or offset between the two sides are pointing at movement in the structure rather than a detailing shortfall. And any diagonal with staining below it has become a water question first and a crack question second.

Horizontal cracks at floor lines are the building shrinking

A long horizontal crack that runs the width of an elevation and lines up with the floor structure inside is a classic and usually well-understood pattern. Wood framing loses moisture and shrinks after construction, most of that shrinkage happening across the depth of the floor framing, and the rigid stucco applied over it has to go somewhere when the wall behind it gets shorter. The result is a horizontal crack at the line where that shrinkage concentrated.

Because the cause is a one-time process, these cracks often stabilize and stay put. That makes them good candidates for repair, provided the repair accounts for the fact that some seasonal movement will continue as the framing responds to humidity and temperature. What you do not want is to treat a horizontal crack as purely cosmetic when it is holding water. A crack at a floor line is horizontal, which means it can collect and hold water rather than shedding it, and that changes the priority.

The crack that matters most is the one that is wet

If you take one thing from all of this, take this: width and pattern tell you about mechanism, but moisture tells you about urgency. A hairline crack with a dark tail running down the wall beneath it, a chalky white efflorescence bloom below it, or soft crumbling stucco at its edges is passing water into the assembly. That crack outranks every wider, drier crack on the house, because water behind stucco in a Utah winter goes through freeze-thaw cycling and takes the material apart from behind.

It is also worth remembering that a wet crack is often not the entry point. Water gets in at interruptions in the wall, at openings, junctions, ledgers, and penetrations, and travels down behind the stucco until something stops it. A crack can simply be where that water finally exits. So a wet crack should trigger a look upward at what is above it rather than an immediate patch, or you will seal the exit and leave the entrance wide open.

Yes, and it is genuinely useful. Mark each end of the crack with a pencil line and note the date, then photograph it in the same light every few months. A crack that has not moved past your marks in a year is stable and can be repaired as a finish issue. One that keeps extending is telling you the movement behind it is ongoing, and that is worth diagnosing before you spend money on the crack itself.

Do cracks mean my stucco was installed badly?

Not by themselves. Some cracking is inherent to cement products and shows up on well-built walls. Installation questions come up when the pattern points that way: cracking at every opening corner on a house, cracking on long unbroken walls that never got control joints, or cracking that follows the lath layout. Those patterns suggest the wall lacked the detailing it needed to manage stress, which is a different conversation than normal weathering.

Should cracks be repaired before winter?

If a crack is passing water, yes, and that is the priority. Water sitting behind stucco through Utah freeze-thaw cycling expands and contracts against the material and takes it apart from the back, turning a narrow crack into a spalled area over a few seasons. Dry, stable, cosmetic cracking has no such urgency and can wait for weather that suits the work, since stucco repairs need reasonable temperatures to cure properly.
